I don`t think you can stop a hamster from peeing in his ball. I never could.
As for the sand, no. You need to buy some chinchilla dust, I think it`s
called.
But it`s really unnecessary for a hamster. The don`t have the thick coat
with natural oils that a chinchilla has.

It has been my experiance that some don't do it, some grow out of it
and some never stop. I agree with you that the hammy is going to do
what they are going to do.

I find for dwarf hamsters that chinchilla dust is a must have. Their
fur is very oily and they look much nicer after a roll in the sand. I
also think, without any evidence at all, that the dust helps them
prevent bacterial infections by keeping them clean.

be sure to get the chinchilla SAND, not the dust. The dust is too fine
which can irritate their respiratory system. Chinchillas can close off
their nostrils which is why they're not bothered by it.

You can also get children's play sand but you need to bake it to
sterilize it.

I guess you can't really potty train a hamster. Although my hamster Lucy
doesn't do it. She has a designated area in her cage, which is cleaned
regularly, maybe that's enough.
Could it be that she is left alone in her ball for a too long a time?
You could consider, putting your hamster back in his/her cage immediately,
as soon as you've discovered that he/she peed. Maybe then your hamster can
learn that peeing has consequences.
I assume you've cleaned the ball every time your hamster peed, case the
smell could start a reaction.

As far as I know, a hamster doesn't need bathing other than the hamster does
itself.
I wouldn't submit my Lucy to sand from outside mainly because of the 'germ
risk'. You could state that being a hamster, a hamster should be able to
handle it. But (to my vision), our (my) hamsters have never been outside, or
subjected to these kinds of risks. (Why would you take a risk like that?)

Kind regards,
and please keep us posted on any changes in behaviour,

All my Syrians are and have been litter trained (only for urine - droppings

It may just be you are leaving him in there for too long. Try putting him
back to his cage at short intervals and then increase the time in the ball
slowly until you find out his maximum. The "girls" ram my ankles if they
want to go back into their cages.

If he's wetting immediately it could be he wasnt fully awake when you got
him out.

If his urine smells very strongly then it could indicate a bladder
infection. His bedding would probably be wet as well.
