Hamster storing bedding in Wheel

I am a hamster newbie. We got one recently for my daughter. We got the
hamster a wheel that attaches to the habitrail. At first she used the
wheel for exercise but now all she does is store her bedding and food
in it. We keep emptying it and she keeps filling it. She is also
starting to fill her habitrail plastic tubes with bedding and food.
What can we do to stop this behavior?

Thanks

Probably nothing.

Hamsters horde food, and they put it where they think it will be safe. Your
new pet is doing what natural instinct tells it to.

Perhaps the best way to try and avoid it is to lose the Habitrail and get an
aquarium tank, with a standalone wheel and maybe one loose tube in there
that they can horde in, plus a house and water and food. A full size
hamster however needs more room than a simple 10 gallon tank provides,
something more like a 20 gallon long style tank would be better.

I've only used a Habitrail for one of the over 31 hamsters we've had here,
and that was for Pinky, and undersized, blind dwarf. She put all her
bedding in the wheel, and would then run in it, making it look like popcorn
going around and around.

Enjoy her as she is, and have fun with her antics, because they are unlikely
to change much. =)

If you take out the wheel and place another container like an empty frozen
juice can; she may use it to store food. Then you can replace the wheel and
perhaps she`ll use it for its intended purpose

You know, when people see a cat's litter box,
they always say, "Oh, have you got a cat?" Just once
I want to say, "No, it's for company!"
